GEXCon Recap

by Olivia Schaller--Updated

From August 31st to September 2nd, N3rd Street Gamers produced two events at GEXCon in Washington DC: a charity stream to benefit the victims of the Jacksonville shooting, and the NCS Eastern Conference CS:GO Championship.

Even though GEXCon wrapped up a few weeks ago, we’re still talking about it. There were a lot of factors that proved challenging leading up to the convention, and there were a few surprises that continue to stand out in our minds.

NSG Eastern Conference Championship

Our central focus for GEXCon was delivering the NSG Eastern Conference Championship. Sponsored by Cougar and presented by Linode, it attracted 23 teams from around the country to face off in a CS:GO tournament for a chance to get a piece of the $10,000 prize pool. Throughout the dual tournament groups and single elimination bracket, there were loads of stunning plays, but ultimately Vision Gaming took home the trophy. See our top five moments in the clip below.

The PogChamps were out in full force at the @COUGAROFFICIAL $10k CS:GO Open Presented by @Linode. Congratulations again to @VisionGaming_GG for winning it all at the #NSGChampionship D.C. stop!

#WEAREMADDEN

Unfortunately, this year’s GEXCon was also conducted in the shadow of a tragedy. One week prior, the shooting in Jacksonville shook the esports world in general, and the Madden community specifically. It was a scene we read about too often in this country, but it wasn’t something that the players were going to let define them. Dubby and a few others stepped up and worked with us to organize a charity stream to benefit the families of the two individuals who lost their lives in the shooting. Joining him during the stream were three time MLB All Star Ryan Howard and four time NBA All Star Ralph Sampson.

Our partner, @ryanhoward, joined @N3rdStGamers Charity Stream with @DubDotDUBBY to talk about #esports investing and more ???? Full video at https://t.co/h2eV6eDe1c | #WeAreMadden pic.twitter.com/Ng9CdZ7PMN

Thank you, GEXCon!

Once the convention was over, the trucks were loaded, and we all got back home, we took a few moments to reflect. Running a tournament at an event is both rewarding and physically draining, but we always talk about the ways we could make it better. Two of our biggest take-aways from GEXCon were the need for more robust technology quality testing and the desperate need for walkie-talkies. Yes, walkie-talkies are a must. At future events, you might hear peeps from the NSG crew throwing a few “niners” around.

Were you at GEXCon? Do you have a suggestion on how we can do things differently at future events? Reach out to us on Facebook or Twitter to let us know. And don’t forget to sign up for our mailing list to stay updated on all things NSG.
