Everything you need to know about Oxygen Esports

by Jessica Scharnagle

Oxygen Esports is expanding the org’s reach by partnering with Kraft Sports & Entertainment, owned by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. News broke Wednesday that the Boston Uprising, which is owned by Kraft, and Oxygen Esports were merging and entering the Call of Duty League in 2022.

So what does this mean for the Boston Uprising and the new CoD team? Since Oxygen Esports and the Boston Uprising have merged, it means that Kraft Sports & Entertainment now has teams in both of the Blizzard titles, and its ties into the industry are reaching further than before with more non-endemic personalities investing in Oxygen such as Rob Gronkowski and Danny Ainge.

“This is an exciting team to be a part of,” said Gronkowski, who played for the New England Patriots. “Oxygen Esports is developing infrastructure and building a sense of community for gamers of all ages in the New England area while providing an opportunity for the most elite to showcase their talents at the professional level.”

Oxygen Esports, also known as OXG, will compete as the 12th team in the 2022 Call of Duty League season with a franchise based in Boston. The name for the team has been rumored to be the Boston Breach, but no official name has been revealed yet.

Oxygen’s other teams

Adding Overwatch and Call of Duty teams means the OXG portfolio has now increased. OXG has teams across many games, including Rainbow Six: Siege, Halo: Infinite, Rocket League, VALORANT and more. With this partnership, they’ll add Overwatch and Call of Duty to that lineup.

OXG entered the VALORANT esport in September 2020 with a team based in Turkey. They had some success in the Turkey region, and they almost made it to the international stage during the Stage 2 qualifier for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The team made it into the semifinals, but lost to Team Liquid, who went on to compete in Stage 2 Masters along with Fnatic.

Their women’s VALORANT team, cleverly named Oxxgen Esports, is also based out of Turkey and was founded in May 2020. They also have had some success in the VCT circuit, scoring top-three finishes in each of the EMEA Game Changers tournaments in 2021.

Oxygen has one of the top Rainbow Six Siege teams in North America. They finished first in the first stage of the North American league and placed 5th-6th at the Six Invitational, the most prestigious R6 international competition.

Their Apex Legends team is currently among the playoffs teams following Split 1 of the Apex Legends Global Series Pro League for North America. Oxygen also has a Halo team competing this weekend at the Kickoff Raleigh Major, the first major tournament for Halo Infinite history.
