100 Thieves VALORANT timeline from LCQ loss to releasing ec1s, BabyJ
by Brian Bencomo
Monday, Feb. 21, is President’s Day and a holiday for many people in the United States, but if you were expecting a slow news day in VALORANT, think again. Following another loss Sunday that led to an 0-2 start to the NA VALORANT Champions Tour Stage 1 main event, 100 Thieves announced Monday that they were cutting Adam "ec1s" Eccles and Hunter "BabyJ" Schline. The two players were added during an offseason for 100 Thieves that began when the team was eliminated from the NA Last Chance Qualifier in October. The move was met with plenty of strong reactions (and memes) online with most people reacting to what they think is a very sudden and drastic move. To get you caught up with everything that has happened with 100 Thieves VALORANT since October, here’s a timeline of the most important events involving the team over the past four months.
100 Thieves lose to Cloud9 in NA LCQ
Oct. 30
With a loss in the lower bracket final to Cloud9, 100 Thieves were officially eliminated from contention for Champions. Despite reaching the semifinals of Masters: Berlin, 100T fell just short of being one of NA’s three representatives at Champions. It marked the end of 100T’s 2021 VCT season and the start of their offseason.
100T and coach FrosT part ways
Nov. 11
The first domino to fall for 100 Thieves was when they parted ways with coach Hector "FrosT" Rosario. FrosT had been placed on competitive probation by Riot Games in March due to “unprofessional behavior towards a Tournament Official.”
100T cut dicey and boi
Nov. 23
Although Quan "dicey" Tran had been benched since February, 100T finally released him in November. The team also released Aaron "b0i" Thao, who had been a substitute for the team and played with them during the LCQ.
100T announce transfer of steel
Dec. 5
The first major part of 100T’s 2021 roster to be released was Joshua “steel” Nissan. He had been benched by the team just ahead of the LCQ despite being the IGL of a roster that reached the semis at Masters: Berlin in September.
100T announce transfer of nitr0
Dec. 7
The next major part of 100T’s 2021 roster to leave the team was Nicholas “Nitr0” Canella. Unlike steel, who intended to continue playing VALORANT and ultimately ended up on T1, nitr0 was rumored to be mulling a return to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Ultimately that’s exactly what he did and now plays for Team Liquid’s CS:GO team.
100T cut seven
Jan. 9
Johann "seven" Hernandez had been a substitute for 100T since September and was with the team for a little over three months before being cut. With seven released, this left two open positions on the team.
Ec1s and BabyJ join 100T
Jan. 17
With the NA VCT 2022 season starting soon, 100T finally announced their two new additions: ec1s and BabyJ. Ec1s was best known for his time with Team Liquid, and BabyJ had spent a big chunk of 2021 with FaZe Clan. Ec1s was brought in as the IGL, taking over the shot-calling position previously held by steel.
100T invited to NA VCT Stage 1 main event
Jan. 18
Less than 10 days before the start of the first open qualifier for the NA Stage 1 main event, Riot Games announced 100T would be one of the four teams invited directly to the main event. Despite two new players on the roster, the team’s top four position in the NA points standings in 2021 allowed them to bypass the qualifiers.
100T lose to Cloud9
Feb. 11
100T’s opening match in the main event was a 2-0 loss to Cloud9, the same team that had knocked them out of the 2021 LCQ and made it the furthest among NA teams at Champions.
100T lose to The Guard
Feb. 20
100T also lost their second match at the main event. This one was a 2-1 loss against The Guard, a young, up-and-coming team that made it to the main event through the first open qualifier. The loss included a 13-0 loss on the deciding third map. It dropped 100T to fifth out of six teams in their group with three matches to play and only the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs.
100T cut ec1s, BabyJ and add bang, jcStani on loan
Feb. 21
On Monday afternoon, 100T announced the additions and subtractions they were making to the roster. Sean "bang" Bezerra would be joining on loan from TSM, and Noah "jcStani" Smith would be on loan from the Pioneers. The moves came not only on the heels of the team’s 13-0 map loss the previous day, but also in the wake of a tweet from owner Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag on Sunday saying “That performance was completely unacceptable from us. Not much else to say, just can’t happen. Period.” On Monday, Nadeshot said he respected all the talent and just wanted to succeed. He posted a video message on Twitter in which he explained the rationale for the move.
