NOVA Nighthawks, Rowan University win MACS tournaments at Localhost
by Brian Bencomo
Northern Virginia Community College and Rowan University won the MACS Rainbow Six Siege and Rocket League tournaments, respectively, this past weekend at Localhost Rowan. It was the second weekend in a row that a Virginia school won a Nerd Street Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Series tournament. For Rowan, it was a special victory because it came in their home venue.
The second weekend of MACS tournaments this year kicked off Saturday at Localhost with six teams competing in Rainbow Six. The six teams were divided into two groups of three for a round robin competition to determine the four teams that would advance to a single elimination bracket. The groups looked like this:
Group A
- Lackawanna College
- Temple University
- BUZZ3D Gaming
Group B
- NOVA (Northern Virginia)
- Drexel University
- Underdog Gaming (Temple University)
Lackawanna and Temple made it out of Group A, while Northern Virginia’s NOVA Nighthawks and Drexel moved on from Group B. Drexel defeated Temple in a close semifinal matchup, and NOVA beat Lackawanna in overtime in the other semifinal. The final was a group play rematch between NOVA and Drexel. Drexel beat NOVA in group play, but NOVA got their revenge with a decisive 2-0 finals victory to win the MACS Rainbow Six tournament.
On Sunday, four teams clashed in Rocket League. Rowan University Gold, Rowan University Brown, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders and Temple University played a round robin tournament before moving on to a single-elimination bracket. The round robin standings ended like this:
- NJIT 3-0
- Rowan Gold 2-1
- Rowan Brown 1-2
- Temple 0-3
This set up a bracket in which NJIT beat Temple in one semifinal, and Rowan’s Gold team beat the school’s Brown team in the other semi. Rowan Gold beat NJIT 3-0 in the final, which was revenge after losing 2-1 to NJIT in round robin play.
